Shift Work Disorder: A Manmade Problem With No Easy Solutions

Shift work is becoming more common, especially in industrialized nations. This is a result of companies needing more and more employees to work unconventional hours. This means that employees have to drastically change their sleeping patterns as often as every week and sometimes even every day. It is no surprise that this can affect the body. Shift workers have been reported to be more likely to fall asleep during the job which in return increases accidents and lessens productivity.

There are two types of shift work. One is the unconventional non fluctuating shift such as 10 p.m. until 6 a.m… The other type is where the person works all three different shifts which are alternated. Both types of shift work have their own effects. A person’s body can usually adjust rather well to different hours if it is permanent. They are able to sleep during the day and wake up ready to work at night. Shift work usually disrupts this pattern which is similar to jet lag. It disturbs the body’s sleep-wake schedule. Unfortunately the body cannot handle the frequent changes in sleep patterns.

The effects differ from person to person. It depends on the person’s age, family situation, and disorders. People who normally stay up late are more likely to adjust to shift work better. Age can also play a factor in the effects of working different hours. Shift workers who are used to changing their sleep patterns might someday all of a sudden start feeling changes. This is because getting older can cause to occur. Sleep Apnea and Narcolepsy often times can cause unpleasant effects in shift work.

Other factors contribute from shift workers not getting the sleep they need. Stress is a big culprit. Other disturbances such as phone calls and family obligations cause less sleep when needed. Shift workers often times get 1.5 hours less sleep than permanent day workers. Unfortunately many of these shift workers have very few options for occupations which mean they have to continue this routine.

Getting at least 8 hours of sleep a day will help to ease the effects of changing shifts often. Although it is not doing your body good, you can still be able to work productively and keep from getting injured.
